Five simple ways to prepare kava — from the traditional cold-water knead to coconut, citrus, and chocolate variations. Each recipe starts with single-cultivar noble kava powder. Mix and match to find your preferred preparation.
Traditional Kava
The classic method: 30g of kava powder to 250ml of cold water. Place powder in a food-grade strainer bag, submerge in water, knead and squeeze for 8 to 10 minutes. Strain into a bowl and serve. Each shell is drunk in one go rather than sipped.
Kava Coconut Cooler
Blend 2 teaspoons of kava powder with 1 cup of coconut water and a teaspoon of honey. Serve over ice for a tropical preparation.
Kava Latte
Mix kava with warm almond milk and a pinch of cinnamon. Sweeten with maple syrup for a creamy preparation.
Berry Kava Smoothie
Combine kava powder with berries, half a banana, and almond milk. Blend until smooth.
Chocolate Kava
Mix kava with cocoa powder, warm milk, and a little honey for a richer preparation.
Tips for first-timers
- Start with smaller amounts as you find your preferred strength.
- Knead thoroughly — the longer you knead, the more is extracted.
- Each preparation has a distinct flavour. Experiment to find what works for you.
